Vegetation Structure and Ecological Characteristic by Altitude of Mudeungsan National Park
Abstract
This study was conducted to identify differences in vegetation characteristics according to slope direction and topography at by altitude in Mudeungsan National Park. A total of 112 plots were installed, and the valley and ridge communities on the southern and northern aspects were each divided into 7 communities according to altitude. In both the valley and ridge communities on the southern and northern aspects, the average tree height, average DBH(diameter of breast height), and average growth amount decreased with increasing altitude. The similarity index was higher in communities with adjacent altitudes than in communities with large differences in altitude. In the case of species diversity, species diversity tended to decrease as the altitude increased based on the slope direction, and based on topography, valley communities showed lower species diversity than ridge communities. The average number of species appearing per community was higher in communities at lower altitudes than in communities at higher altitudes, regardless of slope direction and topography. Currently, in Mudeungsan National Park, there are differences in dominant species due to environmental influences such as slope direction and topography at different altitudes, but deciduous Quercus spp. such as Quercus serrata, Quercus variabilis and Quercus mongolica dominate most communities, so it is believed that the current state will be maintained for the time being.
